Melchizedek: The True High Priest and the Coming Counterfeit
Greater Than Levi: Understanding the Eternal Priesthood
Who was Melchizedek, the mysterious king and priest who met Abraham? Why did Abraham pay tithes to him, and what does that tell us about the priesthood that existed long before the descendants of Levi were appointed to serve in the earthly sanctuary?
In this study of Hebrews 7, Tom examines the evidence connecting Melchizedek with the pre-incarnate Yeshua. Melchizedek is described as the King of Righteousness and King of Peace, without beginning of days or end of life, remaining a priest continually. These descriptions point us toward Yeshua, whose priesthood is eternal and whose righteousness is the foundation of our salvation.
The Levitical priesthood was established by Yehovah, but it could never bring humanity to perfection. Its priests were mortal, sinful men who needed sacrifices for their own sins. Yeshua, however, offered Himself once for all and now lives forever to make intercession for those who come to God through Him. Through His priesthood, the Holy Spirit works within believers, writing God’s laws upon their hearts and restoring His character in their lives.
This distinction carries an important prophetic warning. As interest grows in rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem and reinstating the Levitical priesthood, we must understand what Hebrews teaches about the priesthood that has already been established forever. Returning to earthly sacrifices and an obsolete priesthood would not be a restoration of God’s plan, but a counterfeit of the true heavenly ministry of Yeshua.
Prophetic Insights
1. Melchizedek’s Priesthood Is Greater Than Levi’s
Hebrews 7 explains that Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils to Melchizedek and received his blessing. The lesser is blessed by the greater. Since Levi was still in the loins of Abraham, the writer explains that even Levi, in a sense, paid tithes to Melchizedek.
This establishes the superiority of Melchizedek’s priesthood over the Levitical priesthood that came later.
2. Melchizedek Points to the Pre-Incarnate Yeshua
Melchizedek is described as the King of Righteousness, the King of Peace, and a priest without beginning of days or end of life. Tom examines these descriptions alongside the biblical testimony concerning Yeshua, who existed from everlasting.
The study presents the understanding that Melchizedek was Yeshua Himself before His incarnation, rather than merely an earthly priest who foreshadowed Him.
3. The Levitical Priesthood Could Not Produce Perfection
The Levitical priests were responsible for teaching God’s law, receiving tithes, and administering sacrifices. Yet they were subject to sin and death, just like those they served.
Hebrews 7:11 asks why another priesthood was necessary if perfection could have come through the Levitical system.
The answer is that only Yeshua, the perfect and eternal High Priest, can accomplish the work of restoring God’s image in humanity.
4. The Change in the Law Concerns the Priesthood
Hebrews 7:12 declares that a change in the priesthood requires a change in the law.
This does not mean that God’s Ten Commandments or His standards of righteousness have been abolished. The context concerns the laws governing the priesthood, including the requirement that priests come from the tribe of Levi.
Yeshua came from Judah, yet He serves as High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, not Aaron.
5. The New Covenant Writes God’s Law Upon Our Hearts
Hebrews 8:10, Jeremiah 31:33, and Ezekiel 36:26–27 describe the work that God promises to accomplish in His people.
He gives them a new heart, places His Spirit within them, and causes them to walk in His statutes and judgments.
Righteousness is not produced by human effort to earn salvation. It comes through Yeshua living His life within us, leading us into obedience to Yehovah’s commandments.
6. A Reinstated Levitical Priesthood Would Be a Counterfeit
Hebrews repeatedly declares that Yeshua is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. His priesthood does not end, and it does not need to be replaced.
The Levitical priesthood served as a shadow pointing forward to the true ministry of Yeshua. Once the eternal High Priest has come, returning to an earthly priesthood and sacrificial system would reject the very fulfillment to which those ceremonies pointed.
The restoration of temple sacrifices in Jerusalem would therefore represent a counterfeit priesthood rather than a divinely authorized return to the former system.

Timeline Connection
The establishment of Yeshua’s eternal priesthood is foundational to understanding the final events of Bible prophecy.
Hebrews reveals that the earthly priesthood and sanctuary services were shadows pointing forward to the heavenly reality. Yeshua has now entered His heavenly ministry, where He serves as our eternal High Priest.
The anticipated restoration of an earthly temple and Levitical sacrificial system must be understood in light of this completed transition. Any attempt to reinstate a priesthood that Scripture declares insufficient would be a counterfeit of the ministry of Yeshua.
As the final prophetic events unfold, understanding the difference between the true heavenly priesthood and an earthly counterfeit will be essential to recognizing deception and remaining faithful to Yeshua.
