HOW TO CALCULATE THE BIBLICAL CALENDAR
Year Start: The Biblical year begins in the spring, with the month of Aviv, which Yehovah established as the first month of the year (Exodus 12:2; 13:4). Its timing is tied to the ripening of barley in Israel, ensuring that barley will be ready for the firstfruits offering (Exodus 9:31; Leviticus 23:10–14). In most years, this corresponds with the new moon nearest the spring equinox, whether just before or just after it. However, the condition of the barley, rather than the equinox itself, determines when the Biblical year begins.
Month Start: The Biblical month begins with the first visible crescent of the new moon. The Hebrew word chodesh, meaning “new month,” comes from a root meaning “new” or “renewed” (1 Samuel 20:5; Psalm 81:3). The moon’s cycle averages approximately 29½ days. Therefore, a Biblical month has either 29 or 30 days. If the new crescent is sighted at the end of the 29th day, the new month begins that evening. If it is not sighted, the new month begins the following evening.
ESTIMATED FESTIVAL DATES FOR 2027
The March first sighting of the moon will likely fall on March 9 (2% visibility), which is the new moon nearest the equinox. The April first sighting will fall on April 8.
Assuming that the barley is aviv on the evening of March 9:
- Passover will be from Monday evening, March 22, to Tuesday evening, March 23.
- The seven days of Unleavened Bread will Tuesday evening, March 23, to Tuesday evening, March 30.
- Firstfruits will fall on Sunday, March 28 (beginning Saturday evening March 27), which begins the 50 day count to Pentecost.
- Pentecost will be Saturday evening, May 15, through Sunday evening, May 16.
Remember that these are estimated dates, subject to change when the barley development has been confirmed. If the barley is not aviv by March 9, these dates will move forward based on an April 8 start of the new year.
